Egypt target AFCON title push against Zimbabwe

Egypt open their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign on Monday night against Zimbabwe, with the Pharaohs targeting a fast start in their quest for a record-extending eighth continental title.

Unbeaten in qualifying, Egypt arrive in Morocco under the guidance of Hossam Hassan, who knows the demands of AFCON success better than most after lifting the trophy three times as a player. After falling short in the 2017 and 2021 finals, expectations are high for a side packed with experience and attacking quality.

Mohamed Salah leads the line once again, supported by in-form winger Trezeguet, while Mostafa Mohamed is expected to spearhead the attack. Egypt’s strength lies in their control and tournament know-how, qualities that often prove decisive in tight AFCON openers.

Zimbabwe, however, are unlikely to roll over. The Warriors impressed in qualifying with three clean sheets and arrive knowing a positive result could shape their group hopes, with South Africa and Angola still to come. Captain Knowledge Musona remains their focal point, supported by midfield engine Marvelous Nakamba.

History favours Egypt, who have won all five previous meetings since 2004, but AFCON openers are rarely comfortable. Expect a cagey contest where Egypt’s patience and experience are tested early.
