The Frauen Bundesliga season opener between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday drew a German women’s club record crowd of 57,762 in Munich.
Double winners last season, Bayern won 2-0 thanks to two goals in two second-half minutes from Vanessa Gilles and Klara Buehl.
It was just the fifth match Bayern women have played at the Allianz Arena, where the club’s men’s team play all their home games.
While the 2011 Women’s World Cup opener between Germany and Canada at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium drew 73,680, Saturday’s match broke the German club record of 57,000 set in last season’s German Cup semi-final between hosts Hamburg and Werder Bremen.
The previous Frauen Bundesliga record was 38,365, set in April 2023 between Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt.
The official world record of 91,648 for a women’s football match was set in April 2022 in a Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg at the Camp Nou.
