Mofokeng makes instant impact on USG league debut

Relebohile Mofokeng got his first taste of Belgian Pro League football as Union Saint-Gilloise thrashed Westerlo 5-1 away from home to open their season.

Introduced from the bench, the former Orlando Pirates star needed only a matter of minutes to open his account, getting on the scoresheet as Union ran riot.

It continues a remarkable start to life in Belgium for the 21-year-old, who scored the winning penalty in Union’s Belgian Super Cup triumph over Club Brugge in what was his first official appearance for the club, and had already shown flashes of his quality with an assist during a pre-season draw with PSV Eindhoven.

Mofokeng’s early involvement from the bench appears to be a deliberate pattern from the coaching staff as he continues to settle into a new league, new teammates and a new football culture, with his impact off the bench in each of his first two competitive outings already making him a fan favourite at the club.

Union now turn their attention back to Europe, where they take a 3-3 aggregate scoreline into the second leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie against Bodø/Glimt on 11 August in Norway.
