Zwane signals intent to extend playing career

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane says he intends to continue playing professionally as long as his physical condition allows, emphasising that he alone will determine when it is time to retire.

Mamelodi Sundowns veteran playmaker Themba Zwane has indicated that he plans to extend his professional career for as long as his physical condition permits, despite an extended period marked by recurring injuries.

Zwane, widely regarded as one of the most reliable performers for both club and country over the past decade, endured a challenging spell last season after a series of fitness setbacks restricted his availability. The 36-year-old sustained an injury while on national team duty with Bafana Bafana in October last year, an issue that ruled him out for several months.

His recovery was disrupted again during the MTN8 campaign when he suffered a thigh injury, followed by another setback in a league fixture against Magesi FC in September. These interruptions limited his playing time and raised questions regarding his long-term durability.

Speaking to iDiski Times senior journalist Lorenz Köhler, Zwane explained that he remains committed to competing at the highest level, adding that he will step away only when he feels it is the appropriate moment to do so.

Zwane stated that he will continue to play for as long as he maintains the necessary physical capacity, noting that any decision regarding retirement will be made independently and at the point he feels his contribution is no longer sustainable.

Despite recent challenges, Zwane’s stance reflects his continued belief in his ability to perform and his determination to contribute to a Sundowns side that remains active across multiple competitions.
