Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch will meet once again in the MTN8 final, this time at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, with Stellies determined to settle the score after last season’s controversial defeat.
In last year’s showpiece at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Stellenbosch took an early lead through Lehlohonolo Mojela, only for Pirates to level before half-time via Monnapule Saleng.
Deep into stoppage time, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng struck to secure a 3-1 victory for the Buccaneers. However, Mabasa’s goal was surrounded by controversy, with the quick free-kick appearing to be taken from the wrong spot, leaving Stellies furious as Pirates capitalised on the confusion.
Fast forward to this season, and both teams have battled their way back to the final. Pirates saw off Polokwane City before edging Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties, while Stellenbosch overcame AmaZulu in a thrilling quarter-final and dispatched Sekhukhune United in the semis to set up another crack at the Buccaneers. This time, Barker’s men will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself.
With Pirates unbeaten in their last five and Stellies looking to avenge last season’s controversial final defeat, the stage is set for a fiercely contested showdown. Form points to Pirates as favourites, but Stellenbosch’s hunger for redemption could make all the difference in Mbombela.
