Orlando Pirates return to winning ways in style

Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the table after producing a second-half masterclass to defeat Chippa United in the Betway Premiership.

Orlando Pirates romped to a convincing 3-0 win over Chippa United on Sunday afternoon at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

The defending Betway Premiership champions, who looked stuck in third gear in their previous outing, didn’t start much differently here.

Despite dominating possession in the opening half, the Buccaneers struggled to unlock Stanley Nwabili in the Chippa goal. Oswin Appollis tested him twice early on, but the Nigerian stood firm.

In the 40th minute Goodman Mosele had a golden chance to score against his former side however his volley went just wide of goal from close range. That proved to be the final real opening before the half-time whistle.

The Buccaneers came out much sharper after the break and finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Ghampani Lungu controlled the ball well on the edge of the box and drilled a powerful near-post shot past Nwabili.

Orlando Pirates then doubled their advantage three minutes later when Lebone Seema met Deon Hotto’s corner to head home into the bottom corner.

Daniel Msendami capped off the victory in the 88th minute, making it 3-0 after his sharp pressing rewarded him with a one-on-one chance that he calmly slotted into the bottom corner.

And that’s how it ended in Durban, the Buccaneers complete their seventh consecutive win over a helpless Chippa United side.
