Mofokeng’s rise recognised with Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 honour

Relebohile Mofokeng has added another major accolade to a remarkable year, earning a place on Forbes Africa's 30 Under 30 Class of 2026.

Relebohile Mofokeng has added another major accolade to a remarkable year, earning a place on Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 Class of 2026, a list celebrating the continent’s most influential young leaders and innovators.

The 21-year-old, born in Sharpeville in Vereeniging, has long since shed the “one for the future” label that once followed him through the Orlando Pirates youth ranks.

He is now one of the Betway Premiership’s standout performers, known for his flair, technical quality and fearless approach to the game. His nickname, “President Yama2K” – leader of the generation born from 2000 onwards – speaks to an influence that extends well beyond football into South African youth culture more broadly.

Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 sports category judge Fatma Samoura described Mofokeng as one of the most exciting young footballers South Africa has produced in recent years, placing him alongside fellow honourees including Proteas fast bowler Marco Jansen and Olympic middle-distance champion Prudence Sekgodiso.

The recognition follows a season in which Mofokeng helped end Orlando Pirates’ 14-year wait for a league title, while also representing Bafana Bafana at this year’s World Cup wearing the number 10 jersey.

Despite the growing list of honours, Mofokeng insists his focus remains on football itself. “My focus is to keep on improving and fighting for my position in the team because there is competition, and I also want to focus on becoming a better person,” he said.

With interest from clubs abroad continuing to build, this latest honour adds further weight to a breakout year both on and off the pitch.
