Mofokeng brace keeps Pirates in title race

Orlando Pirates kept pace in the Betway Premiership title race with a 5-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

Pirates started with intent and created early chances, testing the Arrows defence from the opening minutes. Their pressure paid off in the 16th minute when Relebohile Mofokeng opened the scoring. He collected the ball on the edge of the area and curled a shot into the top corner.

The hosts remained in control and doubled their lead in the 30th minute. Oswin Appollis found space outside the box and finished low into the corner after a quick restart caught the visitors out.

Arrows struggled to contain Pirates’ attacking movement and fell further behind before the break. Under pressure in the box, Ayanda Jiyane turned the ball into his own net to make it 3-0.

Pirates continued to dominate after the restart and added a fourth through Mofokeng, who completed his brace with a composed finish after carrying the ball past defenders.

The home side maintained their control in the closing stages and added a fifth in stoppage time. Appollis reacted quickest after a shot struck the post and finished from close range.

Pirates managed the remainder of the match without difficulty, limiting Arrows to few clear opportunities.

The result keeps Pirates within reach of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while Golden Arrows remain in the mid-table positions after a difficult outing.
