Ivorian ends Marumo’s seven-match winless run

Recent Ivorian recruit Eroine Agnikoi scored in added time to give Marumo Gallants a 2-1 home win over Chippa United on Sunday, and end a seven-match winless South African Premiership run.

Marumo made a promising start to the season in August, winning their first two league matches under new 28-year-old French coach Alexandre Lafitte.

But they failed to secure maximum points again in the richest African national league until Ivory Coast under-23 international defender Agnikoi soared at the far post to nod a corner into the net.

Sekela Sithole had put Marumo ahead on 60 minutes with a deflected shot and Cameroonian Bienvenu Eva Nga equalised with two minutes of regular time remaining in central city Bloemfontein.

“Eroine scoring was fantastic. It was a victory we desperately needed. Given time, this team will be very good,” said Lafitte, the youngest of the 16 Premiership coaches.

Belgium-born Chippa boss Luc Eymael is the oldest coach in the league at 66, and was furious after the dramatic loss.

“Never in 26 years as a coach have I seen such poor defending of set pieces. It was unbelievably bad. A complete lack of concentration cost us a point,” he said.
