Chiefs under pressure as Stellies hold top spot

Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC walked away from round two of the CAF Confederation Cup with contrasting emotions, as late drama shaped both South African clubs’ group campaigns.

Chiefs remain winless and under pressure

Chiefs’ 1–1 draw with Zamalek in Polokwane offered a lifeline but also deepened concerns. After conceding inside three minutes through Seifeddine Jaziri, Amakhosi struggled to settle and lost Gastón Sirino to injury early on. Zamalek threatened repeatedly, including a second effort from Jaziri that was ruled offside, before Chiefs finally levelled in stoppage time when Dylan Solomons forced an error from goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi.

The late equaliser prevented back-to-back defeats, but Chiefs’ situation in Group D is worrying. They sit third with just one point from two matches. Al Masry lead the group with a perfect six points, Zamalek are second on four, and ZESCO United remain bottom following consecutive defeats. The Egyptians have since lodged an official complaint to CAF over refereeing decisions, adding further tension to the group dynamic.

Stellies stay top despite late setback

Stellenbosch appeared headed for a vital away win in Zanzibar before Singida Black Stars converted a stoppage-time penalty to earn a 1–1 draw. Stellies endured a difficult opening half, recording only 32% possession and failing to register a shot on target. But their improved second-half structure paid off when Langelihle Phili produced a superb solo strike to give the visitors the lead.

Coach Steve Barker’s side absorbed pressure for much of the match but were undone by a contentious late call. Even so, Stellies remain top of Group C on four points, ahead of Otoho d’Oyo in second and CR Belouizdad in third. Singida Black Stars sit bottom with one point from their first two fixtures.

For Stellenbosch, the draw still represents a solid platform heading into round three. Chiefs, however, face growing urgency. With only one point on the board and tougher fixtures ahead, Amakhosi must find a response quickly to avoid falling further behind.
