Chiefs leave it late to edge Polokwane City

Kaizer Chiefs made it back-to-back Betway Premiership victories after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Polokwane City at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Siphesihle Ndlovu’s well-taken strike with just over 10 minutes remaining proved decisive in a match where Chiefs dominated possession but found the visitors a stubborn opponent.

The hosts started brightly, controlling the early exchanges, yet it was Polokwane City who threatened first through efforts from Mokibelo Ramabu and Ndamulelo Mphangule. Chiefs responded midway through the half, with Gaston Sirino creating openings, and came closest just before the break when Makabi Lilepo’s header from a Sirino corner rattled the crossbar.

After a goalless first half, Chiefs continued to press but were continually frustrated by the organised Polokwane defence. Thabiso Monyane and Lilepo tried their luck from range, while Puleng Marema caused problems for the Soweto side at the other end.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 78th minute when a neat passing move ended with Reeve Frosler’s cut-back finding Ndlovu, who calmly slotted home from close range. Chiefs comfortably saw out the final minutes to seal the win on home soil.
