The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper finished the 2025-26 Betway Premiership season with 21 clean sheets – a new record for the competition. Pirates had the best defence and the best attack in the league. Chaine was at the heart of both.
But when asked about where he stands among the greats of South African goalkeeping, the answer was immediate and humble.

“You can’t rank yourself with somebody you look up to. You can’t put yourself in a sentence with people that pushed you to get to where you are now. It’s like your mentor.”
“A small little kid from Bloemfontein, looking up to Senzo Meyiwa, to Moeneeb Josephs. For you to be mentioned in those type of shoes is something that you can’t really describe. Hearing that throughout this season – that’s quite special.”
Senzo Meyiwa, the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain, was shot and killed in 2014. He remains one of the most beloved figures in South African football history. For Chaine, the comparison is not something he takes lightly.
“I feel honoured to be where I am – and it feels like I’m not really worthy to be where I am.”

The numbers, however, tell a different story. Chaine’s analyst had been tracking a remarkable stat throughout the campaign.
“This season it was 66.6666 percent – when Orlando Pirates stepped on a pitch, you got a clean sheet. That’s a big number.”
“What an amazing group. They got the better of me. They made me realise a certain part of myself that I didn’t think was there.”
