CAF qualification marks growth stage for Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs’ return and standout performances in continental football has been welcomed by former defender and Chiefs veteran Morgan Gould who view their qualification as an important milestone in the clubs development.

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Morgan Gould believes Amakhosi’s qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage represents a stepping stone in rebuilding their continental credentials, while urging that Friday’s league clash against Durban City could prove demanding.

The Nasrec club secured progression into the CAF Cup group stages with a 3-1 victory over AS Simba, joining Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC among PSL sides competing in CAF competitions in recent campaigns.

For Mourgan Gould, this achievement represents an opportunity for growth and a test of the club’s adaptability. “It’s always positive for a team like Kaizer Chiefs to compete at continental level,” Gould told SportsBoom. “It builds pedigree, broadens experience, and strengthens the brand off the field as well. From a football perspective, it prepares the team for higher ambitions such as the Club World Cup.”

“Africa is not like Europe where travel is straightforward. Teams must adapt to different conditions, time zones, and environments. That’s where the test comes — in how players manage fatigue and stay focused,” he explained. “It also forces the technical team to rotate players, use different systems, and develop resilience.”

“These tournaments are stepping stones toward bigger goals. Chiefs must aim to reach later stages — semi-finals and finals — if they want to re-establish themselves as one of Africa’s elite teams,” he added.

Assessing Chiefs’ encounter with Durban City at Moses Mabhida, Gould stated that the clash won’t be straight forward for Amakhosi. “Durban City will want to respond after that loss, and Gavin Hunt knows how to set up his teams for a battle. Chiefs will need to impose themselves early, but I expect a very tight contest.”

“You have a tactician like Hunt on one side and a strong Chiefs squad on the other. That makes it unpredictable — it could become a scrappy, hard-fought game,” he concluded.
