Arrows end five-year winless run against Sundowns

Lamontville Golden Arrows defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 1–0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday, recording their first victory over the defending champions since November 2019.

The result marked Sundowns’ first defeat of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign and lifted Arrows into ninth place on the table.

Junior Dion scored the decisive goal in the 30th minute, converting from a Khumalo corner to register his fourth league goal of the season.

Despite conceding 73% of possession, Arrows created the clearer opportunities and restricted Sundowns to a limited attacking output. Sundowns managed only one first-half shot and were unable to find an equaliser after the interval.

The match also featured several notable squad developments. Khuliso Mudau made his first appearance of the season for Sundowns, while new signing Nuno Santos debuted as a second-half substitute. For Arrows, 18-year-old Ivorian Isaac Cissé made his first senior appearance.

Sundowns’ most dangerous chances came late in the match. Bennett Mokoena struck narrowly wide in the 78th minute, and Mothobi Mvala sent a header over the bar in the closing stages. Arrows nearly added a second goal in stoppage time when Nhlanhla Zwane forced Ronwen Williams into a close-range save.

The defeat leaves Sundowns second on the table, one point behind leaders Sekhukhune United. Miguel Cardoso’s side will attempt to recover against Richards Bay at home on Saturday, while Golden Arrows host Orbit College as they seek consecutive league victories.
