Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night thanks to a convincing 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants.
Miguel Cardoso’s side dominated possession, with goals from Malibongwe Khoza and Cassius Mailula sealing the three points on the night. Mailula’s strike marked his third goal in just four matches following his return to Sundowns at the start of the season.
For Gallants, the defeat extends their difficult winless run in the Betway Premiership to 13 matches, while Masandawana move joint-top of the standings alongside Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on seven points each.
Sundowns ease past Gallants
Mamelodi Sundowns took the lead in the 21st minute when defender Khoza volleyed home from close range after meeting Bathusi Aubaas’ cut-back.
Despite holding over 75% of possession, Cardoso’s side had to wait until the 68th minute when Mailula found the top corner with a thunderous strike from the edge of the box to double his side’s lead.
The Brazilians could’ve made it 3-0 almost immediately after Siyanda Ndlovu’s found Themba Zwane in the box however he failed to control the ball in the six yard box and fire a shot away.
And that’s how it ended: a comfortable 2-0 victory for the hosts, who now turn their attention back to the MTN8 ahead of their semi-final clash against Golden Arrows this weekend.
For the visitors, it’s a week-long break to regroup before they return to league action against TS Galaxy on August 25.
