Late Mkhulise brace secures dramatic win for Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a dramatic opening victory in the Betway Premiership thanks to a late brace by Sphelele Mkhulise.

Mamelodi Sundowns opened their 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign with a dramatic 3-2 win over TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Brazilians got off to a flying start on a cold evening in Mpumalanga after Brayan Leon opened the scoring for them from the penalty spot in as early as the sixth minute.

Sundowns continued to dominate possession as the half wore on, but TS Galaxy’s high-press eventually paid off in the 33rd minute when Victor Letsoalo leveled matters with a neat finish from a tight angle.

The visitors controlled possession and the tempo of the match for most of the match, but struggled to make it count, failing to find the all-important final pass.

In the 80th minute, Mpho Mvelase delivered a pinpoint free-kick to the back post, where Letsoalo met it with a powerful header that struck the woodwork before rebounding in off Ronwen Williams to seal his brace.

Just when Galaxy looked poised to claim a shock victory, the Brazilians struck back in the 89th minute when Sphelele Mkhulise reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to fire home.

Mkhulise wasn’t done yet. The midfielder completed his brace in the 94th minute, clinically finishing off Khuliso Mudau’s cut-back to snatch all three points.

That’s how it finished at the Mbombela Stadium, an incredible 3-2 comeback victory for Mamelodi Sundowns to start their league campaign.
