South Africa came to a standstill on Saturday afternoon when Kaizer Chiefs welcomed Mamelodi Sundowns to the FNB Stadium.
It was a cautious, cagey start at the Calabash, with neither side willing to give an inch. In fact, the opening 30 minutes produced virtually no goalmouth action.
Despite Sundowns bossing possession in the first half, the first real chance fell to Kaizer Chiefs when Inacio Miguel forced a good save from Ronwen Williams after meeting Lebohang Maboe’s free kick.
That proved to be the only major opening of the half, leaving both teams deadlocked at the break.
In the 64th minute, Langelihle Phili lit up the FNB Stadium by finding the bottom corner for Kaizer Chiefs, capping off brilliant work by Siphesihle Ndlovu.
Sundowns hit back in the 75th minute through Cassius Mailula’s very first touch of the game. Talk about an instant impact! The diminutive attacker reacted fastest to a loose ball in the box, heading home past Peterson from close range.
That’s how it finished at the Calabash. Both sides ultimately had to settle for a 1-1 share of the spoils, bringing an end to their 100% winning starts to the new campaign.
