Pep Guardiola says he feels “embarrassed” and “ashamed” after confronting a cameraman in the immediate aftermath of Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.
City were left fuming over a series of officiating calls — a penalty appeal, a handball shout and a tight offside — and Guardiola admitted his emotions got the better of him. At full-time, he marched onto the pitch to speak to referee Sam Barrott before pulling the headphones off a cameraman to deliver a message directly into his ear.
“I apologised,” Guardiola said. “I feel embarrassed, ashamed when I see it. I don’t like it. I apologised after one second to the cameraman. I am who I am. After 1,000 games I’m not a perfect person, I make huge mistakes. The reason why is I want to defend my team and my club.”

The incident came amid further flashpoints, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma ushered down the tunnel and Newcastle midfielder Joelinton held back by Eddie Howe. Guardiola also exchanged words with Magpies captain Bruno Guimarães but insisted there was no bad blood.
“We have known Bruno for many, many years,” he said. “We always talk after games. I don’t know what happened. I’m an emotional guy — I love to talk and move my hands and my arms and everything.”
City now shift focus to Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen, Guardiola’s 100th match in the competition as City manager, as they seek to consolidate their place in the top eight and steady a campaign that has already tested their composure.
