‘PSL clubs’ CAF semifinal runs strengthened Bafana’ – Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane has hailed South Africa’s return to the FIFA World Cup and highlighted the growing impact of domestic clubs’ continental experience as a decisive factor behind the national team’s success.

Bafana Bafana sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3–0 victory over Rwanda on Tuesday, finishing top of Group C ahead of Nigeria who beat Benin 4-0. The result ensured Hugo Broos’ side returned to the global stage for the first time since 2010.

South Africa’s qualification came despite a three-point deduction earlier in the campaign for fielding Teboho Mokoena ineligible against Lesotho, which added significance to the final two rounds of fixtures. Victory over Rwanda ultimately secured their place by a one-point margin over the Super Eagles, who now move on to the CAF playoff.

Mosimane, one of the country’s most decorated coaches, joined a wave of praise for the national team while also offering a measured assessment of the structural progress underpinning their achievement.

“Thank you coach Hugo Broos, Helman [Mkhalele], the technical team and our players who really gave a gallant fight throughout the qualifiers,” Mosimane wrote on social media.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach went further, crediting PSL clubs’ involvement in CAF interclub competitions as a key contributor to Bafana Bafana’s development.

“Participation of our local teams in the semifinals of CAF Champions League and Confederation has added value to our national team,” he explained.

Over recent seasons, South African clubs have become regular contenders in the latter stages of CAF competitions, with Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in particular gaining extensive exposure against elite continental opposition. For Mosimane this experience has enhanced player readiness for the demands of international football.
