South Africa earned a dominant 5-0 victory over Eritrea on Wednesday evening at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo.
Bafana had little time to recover from Saturday’s grueling 2-1 victory over Guinea, making the long journey up to North Africa to face Eritrea just over 72 hours later.
Pitso Mosimane’s side however showed little sign of fatigue, putting on a performance of note in their crucial AFCON qualifier.
Relebohile Mofokeng opened the scoring in the 19th minute for Bafana after latching onto a superb Oswin Appollis pass and firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Mofokeng then completed his brace on the stroke of half time, cutting in from the left and firing into the near post corner after skipping past two defenders.
Oswin Appollis showed great skill in the 51st minute, opening up space for himself before firing a shot at goal forcing a solid save from the opposition keeper however Sphephelo Sithole was on hand to bury the rebound giving his side a 3-0 lead.
Bafana made it 4-0 in the 63rd minute when Iqraam Rayners’ well placed shot found the back of the net after being teed off by Appollis in the 63rd minute.
Luther Singh then completed the rout by making it 5-0 in the dying minutes of the game, finishing home after a lovely Appollis cut-back.
That’s how it ended in Cairo with Mosimane’s men walking away with a convincing 5-0 victory over Eritrea. The win puts South Africa comfortably in charge of Group D on six points after two matches played.
Tomorrow, Guinea host Kenya however neither side will be able to leapfrog South Africa at the top of group D, regardless of the result in Conakry.
