FIFA boss celebrates Bafana’s World Cup return

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has congratulated Bafana Bafana after South Africa sealed their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3–0 victory over Rwanda in Mbombela.

Hugo Broos’ side went into the final round under pressure, needing both a win and a favourable result elsewhere. Nigeria’s 4–0 triumph over Benin ensured the group’s final standings worked in South Africa’s favour, sending them to the World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010.

It marks Bafana’s fourth appearance at football’s biggest event and their first qualification since 2002.

“Congratulations to South Africa on qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States,” Infantino said. “You are coming back to the global stage for the fourth time after your last appearance on home soil in 2010.”

Infantino added that the expanded 104-match format would provide South Africa with another chance to showcase their progress. “You will play in at least three matches in North America next year as part of the greatest celebration of our sport that there has ever been. It will be another example of how football unites the world.”

He concluded: “Congratulations, South Africa. See you soon at the World Cup.”
