Broos: Benin won’t beat Nigeria and Rwanda

Hugo Broos believes Bafana Bafana’s route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains realistic and says South Africa’s rivals will struggle to win their remaining fixtures.

Speaking ahead of Bafana Bafana’s clash with Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, Broos insists qualification is still in their hands.

“Looking at the next games, there are four teams involved, and it’s impossible that all four can win twice,” Broos said. “That’s why Friday’s game is maybe the most important. If we can win, we’ll be on 17 points. Even if Nigeria and Rwanda both win their two matches, they can only reach 17.”

Bafana were docked three points by FIFA for fielding an ineligible Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho in March, dropping them to 14 points and second in Group C behind Benin on goal difference. With Benin still to face Rwanda and Nigeria away, Broos expects dropped points elsewhere to give South Africa an opening.

“Benin cannot win both games because they play against Nigeria and Rwanda away from home,” Broos continued. “So, the game on Friday is so important for us to win.”

The Belgian coach said he has no doubts about his team’s ability to deliver. “There has never been any doubt from my side. I believe in this group, and I’m sure they’ll do everything to win. If any team deserves to go through, it’s South Africa.”

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala has been called up to replace the injured Relebohile Mofokeng, while Lyle Foster and Sphephelo Sithole are expected to join the squad. Zimbabwe, already eliminated, have named an experienced side including Khama Billiat, Knowledge Musona and Wolves midfielder Marshall Munetsi.

Bafana last appeared at a World Cup in 2010, and Broos knows victory over Zimbabwe is essential to keep their return hopes alive.
