Bafana set for huge World Cup payout

Millions are set to be shared among the Bafana Bafana squad after a World Cup bonus structure was confirmed ahead of the 2026 tournament.

All 26 players selected for the squad are in line to receive a significant payout simply for featuring in the group stage of the global showpiece.

According to KICKOFF, it has been agreed between players and the South African Football Association that each squad member will earn around R2 million for taking part in the three group matches.

SAFA is guaranteed at least 9 million US dollars, roughly R150 million, in prize money from FIFA, along with a further 1.5 million US dollars, about R25 million, set aside for preparation costs. This ensures a baseline structure that supports the agreed player payouts for the opening stage.

If South Africa advances to the round of 16, the total payout rises to 11 million US dollars, around R180 million, with individual bonuses expected to increase according to the internal reward framework.

A deeper run would significantly boost earnings. Reaching the final would see a shared pool of about R242 million, working out to roughly R9.3 million per player.

If the team goes on to win the tournament, each player could earn at least R14 million from a total jackpot of around R365 million.

Beyond the squad, Premier Soccer League clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are also set to benefit through FIFA’s Club Benefit Programme, which distributes payments for players involved in the tournament.

The arrangement is strictly between SAFA and the players following internal agreement, and is separate from FIFA contracts, with coaching staff operating under different agreements.
