Amajita fall to France in U20 World Cup opener

South Africa’s U20 side began their 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a 2-1 defeat to France in Group C at Estadio El Teniente on Monday night.

France took the lead in the 25th minute when Anthony Bermont capitalised on a rebound. South Africa responded quickly after Kutlwano Letlhaku was fouled in the box, allowing Jody Ah Shene to convert the penalty and level the scores in the 33rd minute.

Despite equalising, Amajita struggled to control the game. Early in the match, they survived two close attempts from Tadjidine Mmadi and Mayssam Benama, with the latter striking the post. Defender Fletcher Smyth-Lowe made a key save in first-half injury time to keep the scores level at 1-1.

The second half saw France dominate possession, with Lucas Michal missing an early opportunity before finally scoring the decisive goal in the 79th minute. Amajita created a few chances of their own late in the match, including efforts from Shakeel April and Siviwe Magidigidi, but could not convert.

France coach Bernard Diomede praised his side for their performance, calling the win “satisfying” and noting the importance of starting the tournament with a victory.

South Africa coach Raymond Mdaka acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, citing defensive organisation and space management as key issues. He also highlighted the need for improved finishing, despite the number of chances created. Mdaka remained optimistic about the team’s development over the course of the tournament.

Following the opening fixtures, Amajita sit third in Group C. They will face New Caledonia on Friday morning at Estadio El Teniente, while France take on the United States. The match will be crucial for South Africa to remain in contention for progression from the group stage.
