What happened the last time Barcelona and Real Madrid met

Barcelona and Real Madrid meet at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday for the first Clásico of the season.

Barcelona went into the game needing only to avoid defeat to be crowned champions, and they were 2-0 up inside 18 minutes. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring in the ninth minute, curling a free-kick into the top corner.

Nine minutes later, Dani Olmo’s backheel set up Ferran Torres, who drove the ball past Thibaut Courtois.

Madrid were without the injured Kylian Mbappé, and they couldn’t find a way back. The win put Barcelona 14 points clear with three games to play, confirming their 29th league title and their second in a row.

It was an emotional night for Hansi Flick. Hours before kick-off, the club announced that his father had died, but the Barcelona coach stayed with his team and celebrated with his players at the final whistle.

The game was also the first Clásico at the Camp Nou since the club returned to the redeveloped stadium, with more than 62,000 fans inside.

For Madrid, the defeat sealed a season without a trophy. They finished the 2025-26 campaign with one win from three Clásicos, a 2-1 league win at the Bernabéu in October.

Barcelona won the other two, beating them 3-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final in January before the title-clinching win in May.

A lot has changed since then. Álvaro Arbeloa, who was in charge of Madrid that night, has been replaced by José Mourinho, and Madrid arrive six points behind league leaders Barcelona.
