On 20 September 2007, José Mourinho’s first spell as Chelsea manager came to an abrupt end after more than three years at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea announced in the early hours of 20 September that the Portuguese coach had left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent after more than three years in charge.

His departure came two days after Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Rosenborg in their opening Champions League group match.
Mourinho had arrived from Porto in 2004 after winning the Champions League and quickly changed the landscape of English football.
Chelsea won the Premier League in each of his first two seasons, with the 2004-05 triumph ending the club’s 50-year wait for the English league title. He also won the FA Cup and two League Cups during his first spell.
The club said Mourinho had left by mutual consent, bringing an unexpected end to one of the most successful managerial spells in Chelsea’s history. Avram Grant was appointed as his replacement later that day.
