All roads lead to Midrand today as SAFA gathers for its high-stakes Elective Congress, but the ballot has been overshadowed by ugly drama.
At the center of the agenda is a fierce presidential showdown, with long-serving incumbent Danny Jordaan facing a stern challenge from AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu for the top seat.
Jordaan has been leading the association for well over a decade after succeeding Kirsten Nematandani back in 2013.
This weekend though, it can all change as regional delegates and PSL reps are in town for the secret ballot to map out the next term for the association’s leadership and the National Executive Committee.
Death Threats Cast Dark Cloud Over SAFA Elective Congress
With hours to go before the congress gets underway, things took a dark turn behind the scenes as the association revealed that several delegates have been targeted with explicit death threats, intense harassment, and severe intimidation ahead of the vote.
SAFA didn’t mince their words, pointing out that this wave of pressure marks a desperate escalation after “calculated attempts to derail the Elective Congress and cast aspersions about the processes failed to achieve the desired objective,” the association revealed in an official statement.
With security heavily beefed up around the venue, football’s governing body confirmed they are taking the matter straight to law enforcement, “SAFA takes these threats very seriously and the police will be notified accordingly,”.
Today’s congress brings together key voting members from all 52 regions, alongside the Premier Soccer League as a special member and various associate members, all converging to cast their secret ballots.
Beyond the presidential clash between Jordaan and Zungu, delegates are also voting to shape the new National Executive Committee and provincial offices.
