Mamelodi Sundowns earned a 3-0 victory over Siwelele FC at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening, courtesy of second-half goals by Kutlwano Letlhaku, Siyanda Ndlovu and Tashreeq Matthews.
Despite dominating the first half with 70% possession and 10 shots at goal, Miguel Cardoso’s side struggled to break down a stubborn Siwelele defence before the break.
Sundowns created a few early chances with Letlhaku missing the target from the edge of the box in the 33rd minute, before Aubrey Modiba fired just over the crossbar right on the stroke of half-time.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 58th minute when Teboho Mokoena unleashed a powerful long-range strike that rattled the crossbar, leaving Letlhaku sharpest to react and slot home the rebound past goalkeeper Wandile Mthombeni.
Ten minutes later, Mthombeni denied Aubrey Modiba with a brilliant save, getting a crucial fingertip to a goal-bound free-kick to tip it onto the crossbar.
Masandawana then doubled their lead in the 78th minute through Siyanda Ndlovu who latched onto Aphiwe Baliti’s shocking error in the box, and fired home from close range.
Tashreeq Matthews then put the cherry on the cake for his side in the 92nd minute with an audacious lob after being played in by Siyanda Ndlovu in the 92nd minute.
That is how it ended at Loftus Versfeld, a comfortable victory for Miguel Cardoso’s side, who move six points clear at the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
Sure, Sundowns have played two games more than Orlando Pirates, but it’s job well done nonetheless. Next up for Cardoso’s side is an away trip to face Chippa United this weekend in the league.
Siwelele on the other hand remain winless this season, with just two points from their opening six matches.
