The South African Football Association confirmed Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana head coach at a press conference at SAFA House in Nasrec on Tuesday, bringing an end to weeks of contract talks since the SAFA National Executive Committee first approved his appointment on 8 August.

Mosimane takes over from Hugo Broos, who left the post on 31 July after more than five years in charge. The Belgian’s tenure delivered third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and Bafana Bafana’s first World Cup qualification in 24 years, with the team going on to reach the tournament’s second round in the United States, Mexico and Canada this year, their best-ever World Cup showing.
This is Mosimane’s second spell with the national team. He first took charge in 2010 after serving as an assistant to Carlos Alberto Parreira, but was dismissed following Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
In between, Mosimane built one of the most decorated coaching records in African football. He won the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016, the club’s first continental title, before winning it twice more with Al Ahly, in 2020 and 2021, alongside the Egyptian Premier League, Egypt Cup and CAF Super Cup.
He had been without a club since leaving Iranian side Esteghlal in January 2025.
AFRICA PICKS: Football tips and predictions
Mosimane’s first task will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Bafana Bafana have been drawn in Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea and co-hosts Kenya.
With Kenya already through as automatic qualifiers, Mosimane’s side face an immediate fight with Guinea and Eritrea for the group’s one remaining qualifying spot.
