Plaatjies treble seals Stellenbosch win

Debutant Quwan Plaatjies scored all three goals as Stellenbosch beat Marumo Gallants to open their season with a win.

Quwan Plaatjies marked his Betway Premiership debut with a hat-trick as Stellenbosch beat Marumo Gallants 3-1 at Athlone Stadium on Friday night, securing their first win of the season and moving into third place in the standings.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring in the 13th minute, cutting inside from the left before curling a finish into the bottom corner. He doubled his tally on 28 minutes, rising to head home a pinpoint cross from Raoul Daniels, before completing his treble nine minutes into the second half when the same combination found him again to make it 3-0.

Gallants pulled a consolation goal back through Thapelo Dhludhlu in the 81st minute, but Stellenbosch held firm to close out the win.

Gavin Hunt’s side next travel to face Golden Arrows on 26 August, while Gallants, who remain without a win and sit 15th in the table, face a daunting trip to Mamelodi Sundowns on 19 August under coach Phuti Mohafe.
