South African star Relebohile Mofokeng’s UEFA Champions League journey came to an abrupt halt on Tuesday evening when Union Saint-Gilloise went down against Norway’s FK Bodø/Glimt.
The two sides met in the third qualifying round of the 2026/27 Champions League campaign, and after a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg in Belgium, it was all to play for at the Aspmyra Stadium.
Unfortunately for the visitors, they were undone in extra time after a 2-2 draw during regulation time, with Andreas Helmersen’s 117th-minute strike sealing Bodø/Glimt’s spot in this season’s competition.
Mofokeng’s USG fail to qualify for Champions League
It was a week of highs and lows for Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng. After scoring his first official goal for the club in the Belgian Pro League against Westerlo over the weekend, Mofokeng was expected to play a big role for Union Saint-Gilloise in their must-win Champions League qualifier against FK Bodø/Glimt.
Mofokeng, however, was only introduced at the start of extra time and was unable to make a telling impact during his 30-minute cameo.
Notably, the former Orlando Pirates star was also an unused substitute in the first leg. He’ll have to swiftly put his Champions League heartbreak behind him, with an important league game against Waregam looming over the weekend.
