Arsenal opened negotiations well below that figure while Newcastle pushed for more, but the two clubs have now settled on a compromise that clears the way for the 28-year-old to complete his desired move, according to The Athletic.
Guimaraes informed Newcastle of his wish to leave for north London in early July, with Arsenal’s opening offer, below £60 million, rejected before talks progressed toward the eventual fee.
He has two years left on the five-year deal he signed in October 2023, and a temporary £100 million release clause inserted into that contract expired unused in June 2024. His former club Lyon are entitled to 20 per cent of Newcastle’s profit on the sale.
The move continues a summer of major departures at St James’ Park, following the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, as well as Eddie Howe’s exit as head coach.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 for around €50 million. He went on to make 153 Premier League appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists, and captained the side to Carabao Cup success in 2025.
He also started every game for Brazil at last year’s World Cup, contributing four assists from midfield.
