Kaizer Chiefs got their 2026/27 Betway Premiership underway in impressive fashion on Saturday night at the Mbombela Stadium.
Fernando Da Cruz and his men secured a vital 3-1 victory against newly promoted Kruger United to kick off the new campaign on a positive note.
A number of Amakhosi players raised their hands with solid performances that will give the technical team plenty of encouragement for the long campaign ahead. Below, we focus on the top three performances of the night.
Three standout Kaizer Chiefs performances against Kruger
From sharp finishing to solid defensive work, both Da Cruz and Amakhosi fans were left impressed with their side’s opening performance.
Reeve Frosler looked like his former self against Kruger United. He was tactically disciplined, precise with his passing and crossing, and looked one step ahead of his opponents.
We all know he is a quality player, however, he has been somewhat underperformed over the past few seasons. Him firing on all cylinders will only bode well for Chiefs going ahead.
It was also an impressive evening for Amakhosi youngster Mfundo Vilakazi. Da Cruz’ faith in the youngster paid off immediately when Vilakazi’s assist let to Kaizer Chiefs’ opening goal. He looked full of confidence and as dangerous as ever throughout the match.
Introduced at the break, Wandile Duba delivered two match-winning goals for Kaizer Chiefs in the space of ten minutes. Finding himself in the right places at the right time, his clinical impact is something Fernando Da Cruz will be extremely pleased with.
Last season, the Glamour Boys only managed to score 33 goals in 30 league games, so banking three on the opening night will come as a boost for the season ahead. Next up is a tricky MTN8 quarterfinal fixture against Golden Arrows on Sunday, 09 August for Da Cruz’ side.
