SAFA president Danny Jordaan made the announcement during a briefing at SAFA House, thanking the 74-year-old as his contract officially expired.
Broos took charge in June 2021, at a time when confidence in the national team had hit rock bottom. He set about rebuilding the squad around a clear tactical identity and a willingness to trust young players, several of whom made their international breakthroughs under his watch, and restored Bafana Bafana as a genuine force on the continent.

Broos led South Africa to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, secured qualification for the 2025 tournament in Morocco, and, most notably, guided the country back to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in sixteen years, where Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
SAFA had reportedly offered him a one-year extension through to the 2027 AFCON, but Broos turned it down, having long spoken of wanting to step back from full-time coaching after almost four decades in the game to spend more time with his family. He has not ruled out staying involved in an advisory or scouting capacity.
SAFA must now find a successor before Bafana Bafana begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in September, with Pitso Mosimane reportedly the frontrunner.
