The four year deal will cover both Euro 2028 in Great Britain and the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Klopp replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany’s round of 32 exit at this summer’s World Cup.
The German Football Association’s president Bernd Neuendorf and vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke led negotiations with Klopp in New York during the tournament, with the final hurdle being an exit agreement with Red Bull, where Klopp has served as Head of Global Soccer since January 2025.
Klopp, 59, returns to management for the first time since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, having also managed Borussia Dortmund between 2008 and 2015.
The German pulled no punches in his opening press conference, confidently setting his boundaries with the German media at his presentation.
“I’m not doing this job for myself. I’m doing it for you”, Klopp sad. “I’m taking this job even though I’ve seen how you’ve treated Julian Nagelsmann. I’m taking it even though I’ve seen how you’ve treated Thomas Tuchel.”
“If you go after my family, I’m gone. If you think I’m rubbish, tell me to my face and I’ll leave immediately, without asking for any compensation.”
He won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Anfield, and was named FIFA Coach of the Year in both 2019 and 2020.
Klopp is expected to bring former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders with him, with Germany’s first match under the new coaching duo likely to come against the Netherlands in September.
