Luke Shaw scored the fastest goal in European Championship final history, giving England the lead inside two minutes, before Leonardo Bonucci equalised for Italy in the 67th minute to send the match to extra time and eventually penalties.
The shootout proved decisive. Marcus Rashford struck the post, Jadon Sancho missed his effort, and Bukayo Saka’s penalty was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, sealing a 3-2 win as Federico Bernardeschi, Leonardo Bonucci and Domenico Berardi converted for Italy.
The result extended Italy’s unbeaten run to 34 consecutive matches, just one shy of the men’s international record at the time, and delivered their first European title since 1968.
For England, it meant a 55 year wait for a major trophy would continue, following their agonising defeat in front of a crowd of over 60,000 at Wembley.
