In Qatar in 2022, Messi finally held the object his heart had desired above everything else. The World Cup was pressed against his chest, the debate around his greatness fading beneath a shower of gold.
He had completed football.
Four years later, the picture could hardly have been more different.
There was no trophy waiting for Messi in New Jersey. No golden light. No perfect ending.
Only tears.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time, ending their reign and possibly bringing down the curtain on Messi’s World Cup career.
At 39, he had dragged Argentina back to the final with eight goals and four assists. He remained their inspiration, their creator and their point of difference.

But Spain gave him no space to be any of those things.
Messi managed only 20 touches as Argentina spent most of the final defending. He waited until the closing minutes of extra time for his first attempt at goal.
By then, Ferran Torres had already scored the goal that would return the World Cup to Spain.
Messi had carried Argentina this far. He could carry them no further.
The final whistle brought a new image. Messi stood in tears while Spain celebrated around him, before walking away with a runners-up medal and one final look at the trophy that once belonged to him.

But defeat cannot take back what 2022 gave him.
That night in Qatar settled the question for many. Messi had climbed the final mountain, kissed the World Cup and placed himself beyond the one argument that had followed him throughout his career.
This brought heartbreak. It diminished nothing.
Messi leaves this World Cup with 21 career goals in the competition, a champion’s medal and a legacy that will stand the test of time.
If this was the end, it was an imperfect farewell to a career that had already found its perfect moment.
The World Cup slipped from his hands this time.
His place in history did not.
