Argentina’s breathtaking 3-2 victory over Egypt was all of those things.
It was the finest match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far. A contest filled with drama, brilliance, heartbreak and one more unforgettable chapter in the extraordinary career of Lionel Messi.
For a while, though, it looked as though the story would end very differently.
Messi, under immense pressure, missed yet another penalty early in the contest, giving Egypt belief that one of the tournament favourites could finally be vulnerable. It only added another layer of tension to a knockout tie that could not be scripted.
Egypt never enjoyed much of the ball. Argentina controlled possession, dictated the tempo and camped inside the opposition half for long periods. Yet every time the Pharaohs broke forward, they looked capable of hurting Argentina. Every counterattack carried genuine menace and every transition felt like it could produce another goal.

It was a masterclass in contrasting styles. Argentina patiently probed. Egypt struck with pace and purpose.
The drama only intensified after the break when Egypt thought they had extended their advantage even further, only for a controversial VAR decision to rule out what would have been a decisive third goal.
When Egypt raced into a 2-0 lead with just 11 minutes of normal time remaining, the impossible suddenly looked possible. An African nation stood on the verge of one of the greatest World Cup upsets ever seen.
As a neutral, it created the ultimate emotional tug of war.
Part of you desperately wanted Egypt to hold on. African football has waited decades for another truly defining World Cup moment, and this felt like it could be one. Mohamed Salah and his teammates had defended courageously, attacked fearlessly and stood on the brink of history.

The other part of you could not help but think about what defeat would mean.
Less than 24 hours after Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup dream came to an end, football stood on the edge of saying goodbye to Lionel Messi on the biggest stage. Two players who have defined an entire generation, and arguably the greatest rivalry the sport has ever known, looked set to leave the tournament within a day of each other.
It felt too soon.
Great players produce moments. The greatest players change destinies.
Messi did exactly that.
With Argentina staring elimination in the face, the captain took control. His pinpoint cross allowed Cristian Romero to head home and spark the comeback before Messi volleyed in a magnificent equaliser four minutes later. Suddenly the momentum had completely shifted.
Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez rose to head home the winner and complete one of the most dramatic turnarounds the World Cup has seen.
From despair to delirium in little more than 10 minutes, Argentina completed one of the greatest World Cup escapes to book their place in the quarter finals.
For Egypt, it was devastating. Salah and his teammates deserved enormous credit for producing a performance of courage, discipline and clinical finishing against one of the tournament favourites. They came within touching distance of history before watching it slip away in the cruellest fashion.
For Argentina, the dream lives on.
For Messi, another masterpiece was added to a career overflowing with them.
And for everyone watching, it was a reminder that football, at its very best, can leave you emotionally torn, breathless and grateful to have witnessed it.
If the 2026 World Cup needed a defining match, it has found one.
