Netherlands create more, Morocco convert when it matters

Morocco produced another famous World Cup knockout result, eliminating the Netherlands 3–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in a match defined by Dutch possession and Moroccan defensive organisation and efficiency.

Attacking control: Netherlands dominate possession but lack cutting edge

The Netherlands controlled large stretches of the match with 70% possession and 878 passes at 91% accuracy, compared to Morocco’s 373 passes at 79%. They dictated tempo and territory for long periods but struggled to turn dominance into clear finishing advantage.

Netherlands registered 6 shots to Morocco’s 11, but only 2 were on target. They also produced 4 shots off target and saw 2 efforts blocked, reflecting difficulty in breaking down Morocco’s strong defensive lines.

Despite 8 corners and 10 goal attempts, their attacking output lacked clinical edge in decisive moments. Morocco, by contrast, were more direct and efficient, creating 5 shots on target from fewer attacking phases and generating higher threat in transition.

Netherlands also committed 18 fouls to Morocco’s 15, disrupting rhythm but also failing to regain attacking momentum in key phases.

Defensive resilience: Morocco absorb pressure and stay compact

Morocco’s defensive performance was the foundation of their result, as they repeatedly absorbed Dutch pressure and remained compact under possession.

They recorded 19 tackles, 10 interceptions, and 51 duels won, matching the Netherlands physically while limiting clear openings despite long spells without the ball. They also blocked 3 shots and restricted the Dutch to just 2 shots on target.

Goalkeeper involvement was crucial, with Morocco making 5 saves compared to the Netherlands’ 1, highlighting the defensive workload faced under pressure.

Morocco also defended a high number of deliveries, dealing with 18 crosses and winning key aerial battles through 11 successful headers. Even under pressure, they maintained discipline in their defensive sets.

Netherlands attempted 19 dribbles but only completed 7 successfully, with Morocco’s compact defence limiting space between the lines and forcing wide or low-quality entries into the box.

Penalties decide another Moroccan upset

Despite heavy Dutch dominance in possession and passing, Morocco’s defensive organisation and efficiency in both boxes proved decisive. After a 1–1 draw, Morocco held their nerve in the shootout to complete another major World Cup upset and progress to the last 16.
