Maseko’s 63rd-minute strike secured a famous victory for Hugo Broos’ side, who combined disciplined defending with incisive attacking play to seal their place in the last 32.
The result marks a historic breakthrough for South Africa, who had previously failed to progress beyond the group stage in their three earlier World Cup appearances.
Although South Korea enjoyed the majority of possession, it was South Africa who fashioned the clearer opportunities throughout an entertaining contest at Estadio BBVA.

Bafana started brightly and almost struck midway through the first half when Thalente Mbatha’s fierce drive was parried by goalkeeper Kim Seung Gyu, only for Evidence Makgopa to send the rebound straight at the South Korean keeper from close range.
Thapelo Maseko and Relebohile Mofokeng also threatened as South Africa repeatedly exposed the Asian side on the counter attack.
South Korea controlled possession for long periods, with Kang In Lee pulling the strings in midfield, but struggled to break down a resolute South African defence led superbly by captain Ronwen Williams.
The Koreans’ best opportunity arrived on the hour mark when Son Heung Min, introduced at half time, directed a close-range header towards goal only for Williams to produce an excellent save.
Three minutes later, South Africa delivered the decisive blow.

Mofokeng unlocked the South Korean defence with a clever pass before substitute Tshepang Moremi whipped a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Maseko timed his run perfectly before sweeping a left footed finish beyond Kim to send the South African supporters into celebration.
South Korea pressed for an equaliser during the closing stages, but Khuliso Mudau, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Ime Okon produced a series of crucial defensive interventions to preserve Bafana’s advantage.
As the final whistle sounded, South Africa celebrated a landmark victory that secured their first ever passage to the knockout rounds of the World Cup.
