The 7-1 scoreline will not be lost on Brazil. Twelve years ago, Germany inflicted the same result on the Selecao in the Estadio Mineirao – one of the most devastating nights in Brazilian football history. This time, the victims were Curacao, but the scoreline carries the same echo.
Germany have now scored 239 goals in 113 matches across 21 tournaments. Brazil, who have played in 23 editions and 115 matches, sit one behind on 238. Argentina are a distant third with 152.
The record may not last long. Brazil face Haiti in their second Group C match and are heavy favourites to score freely. But for now, Germany stand alone at the summit of one of football’s most prestigious statistical milestones.
