Ribeiro clubless after Leonesa relegation

Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Lucas Costa Ribeiro has become a free agent after Cultural Deportiva Leonesa were relegated to the third tier of Spanish football.

The 27-year-old’s spell in Spain has come to an end after Cultural Deportiva Leonesa confirmed his departure following the club’s relegation to Spain’s third tier.

As reported by Soccer Laduma, Ribeiro is one of 14 players released as the club rebuilds following their drop from the Segunda División.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns winger contributed six goals and two assists in 31 appearances during his single season at the club – a respectable return for a player who had little time to settle before the club’s campaign unravelled around him.

Leonesa acknowledged his contribution in a brief statement. “The club thanks the players who are ending their time here for their work, professionalism and dedication during their time in León.”

Ribeiro’s next destination may already be taking shape. Reports from the African continent suggest the Brazilian-born winger is being tracked by Libyan side Al-Ittihad – where a reunion with former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena could await.
