Appollis who contributed 8 goals and 9 assists in his debut season at the club, was not interested in personal glory on Saturday afternoon. His message was the same throughout – this belonged to everyone.
“It’s all about sacrifice and hard work. The team did it today – but not only today.”
“I want to congratulate the whole squad, even the players who understood their role and worked hard with us to get to be champions. I want to say thank you to the staff, the girls who keep cooking for everyone. Just thank you to everyone.”
Appollis was grateful to the club for bringing him in at the start of the season as one of 11 new signings and he more than paid it off with a superb infividual campaign.
“First and foremost I have to give credit to the team for helping me and to the club who signed me at the beginning of the season. Thank you to the board. Thank you to the coach for believing in me and to my teammates who believed in me – because it’s a collective effort and we did it together.”
He also addressed last week’s performance against Durban City, which had raised doubts about whether Pirates could get the job done.
“We knew we had the advantage and we were a little disappointed in our draw last week. But we knew we were good enough to overcome that and score goals – that’s exactly what the boys did today.”
“The club signed 11 players and our goal was to win the league. Today we can all be proud. What can I say more – just happy to be a champion.”
