City keep pressure on Arsenal with Brentford win

Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku were on the scoresheet as City closed to within two points of Arsenal, while Bournemouth won at Fulham and Brighton thrashed Wolves.

City could not afford another slip after their 3-3 draw at Everton on Monday. They delivered. Doku curled a fine opener in the 60th minute before Haaland backheeled a second, moving four goals clear of Brentford’s Igor Thiago in the Golden Boot race. Omar Marmoush wrapped up the points in stoppage time.

City also cut Arsenal’s goal difference advantage to one. The title is in Arsenal’s hands but Pep Guardiola’s side are refusing to let go.

At Anfield the mood was very different. Ryan Gravenberch gave Liverpool a perfect start in the sixth minute with a sweet curling strike.

Chelsea hit back before half-time when Enzo Fernandez’s free kick evaded everyone to find the bottom corner.

Liverpool could not find a winner and were booed off at full-time. Arne Slot remained defiant afterwards, promising a “completely different” side next season.

Bournemouth’s 1-0 win over Fulham cut Liverpool’s lead over sixth place to four points with two games remaining. Both sides were reduced to 10 men before half-time at Craven Cottage, with Brazilian teenager Rayan settling the contest with a fine finish in the 53rd minute.

Brighton climbed to seventh with a 3-0 win over already-relegated Wolves. Jack Hinshelwood headed them in front after just 37 seconds before Lewis Dunk doubled the advantage five minutes later. Yankuba Minteh completed the rout late on.

Manchester United drew 0-0 at Sunderland in an uninspiring affair. Their Champions League place is already secured and it showed.

With three games remaining, the title race, the top-five battle and the European places are all still to be decided. Sunday’s trip to West Ham could be the most important afternoon of Arsenal’s season.
