Leicester hit rock bottom with Championship relegation

Leicester’s decline continued as a late Hull equaliser confirmed their drop to League One, just 10 years after their Premier League title win.

Needing a win to keep survival hopes alive, Leicester fell behind early to Liam Millar before James Justin equalised from the penalty spot early in the second half. Luke Thomas then gave them the lead, but Oli McBurnie’s 63rd-minute strike secured a draw that confirmed relegation.

Leicester are now seven points from safety with two matches remaining and will play in League One for the first time since 2008-09. It is their third relegation in four seasons, having dropped out of the Premier League in 2023 and 2025.

The result marks a stark contrast to their recent history. The club won the Premier League in 2016 and lifted the FA Cup in 2021, but that success has been followed by a steady decline on and off the pitch.

Manager Gary Rowett admitted the scale of the setback. “We have to accept this is a difficult moment for the club,” he said. “You don’t get relegated over a few games, it happens over a season.”

Leicester’s struggles have been shaped by inconsistency, squad changes and financial issues, including a points deduction for breaching spending rules.

With their top-flight success now a distant memory, the focus turns to rebuilding as Leicester prepare for life in the third tier.
