Pitch invasion throws CAF semi-final into chaos

Crowd trouble disrupted the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final between Olympique Safi and USM Alger, with a pitch invasion delaying kick-off by over an hour on Sunday.

Large groups of supporters stormed the field before the match at Stade El Massira, forcing players and officials to leave the pitch. USM Alger initially refused to return from the dressing room despite assurances from CAF that security conditions had been restored.

After an hour and 20-minute delay, the match eventually got underway.

The scenes took attention away from the action on the pitch.

On the pitch, USM Alger secured their place in the final after a 1-1 draw on the night saw them progress on the away goals rule.

Ahmed Khaldi gave the visitors the advantage just before half-time, converting from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a handball. The goal proved decisive in the context of the tie.

Olympique Safi responded in the second half, with Moussa Kone heading home in the 75th minute to level the score. The hosts pushed for a late winner during an extended period of added time, but struggled to create clear chances.

USM Alger held firm defensively to see out the result and confirm progression.

They will now face Zamalek SC in the final over two legs in May.

While the result sends USM Alger through, the scenes before kick-off are likely to draw scrutiny from CAF.
