Javier Mascherano has announced he is leaving his role as Inter Miami head coach with immediate effect, stepping down for personal reasons just months after leading the club to major success.
Mascherano was appointed in November 2024, taking on his first senior club role after working with Argentina’s youth teams. His arrival reunited him with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, forming the core of a high-profile Inter Miami squad.

His tenure delivered immediate results. Inter Miami secured the 2025 MLS Cup, the first in the club’s history, while also finishing top of the Eastern Conference. The team combined control in possession with attacking output, scoring over 100 goals across the campaign.
Despite that success, Mascherano’s departure brings an abrupt end to a short but productive spell in charge. His emphasis on structure and discipline helped stabilise the side, while the experience of his former Barcelona teammates remained central to their progress.
Inter Miami must now look for continuity as they attempt to build on a historic season and maintain their position among the leading sides in MLS.
