Stellies held as Galaxy snap losing run

TS Galaxy ended a five-match losing run in the Betway Premiership after holding Stellenbosch FC to a 1-1 draw at the Danie Craven Stadium on Friday night.

Junior Zindoga handed the visitors an early advantage before Wonderboy Makhubu struck in the second half to earn Stellenbosch a share of the points. The result leaves Galaxy in eighth place, with Stellies just behind them in ninth.

Galaxy made a fast start and took the lead after only 45 seconds. Victor Letsoalo drove into the left side of the penalty area and forced a save from goalkeeper Sage Stephens, but Zindoga reacted quickest to the rebound to score.

Stellenbosch gradually settled and began to push forward in search of an equaliser. Despite their pressure, Galaxy nearly doubled their lead shortly before halftime when Mpho Mvelase rounded Stephens and shot toward goal, only for Mosa Lebusa to clear off the line.

The hosts continued to threaten and almost levelled two minutes before the break. Devin Titus delivered a free kick that found Makhubu, but Ira Tape produced a strong save to keep Galaxy ahead.

Stellenbosch introduced Tshegofatso Mabasa and Thabo Molisane at the start of the second half as they looked to increase their attacking options.

The change had an impact in the 57th minute when Titus delivered an in-swinging cross from the right and Makhubu powered a header past Tape to make it 1-1.

Galaxy continued to pose a threat and went close to regaining the lead on 70 minutes, but Mvelase headed Seluleki Mahlambi’s cross over the bar.

The visitors nearly snatched a late winner when Zindoga attempted to chip Stephens after collecting a long ball, but his effort dropped onto the roof of the net.

Stellenbosch extend their unbeaten league run to six matches, while Galaxy move forward after ending their recent losing streak.
