Broos urges Mbokazi to secure European move

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has reiterated his belief that Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi should move to Europe at the earliest opportunity to continue his development.

Speaking during his squad announcement for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, Broos underlined the progress made by South African football during his tenure, while stressing the importance of players testing themselves at a higher level.

Mbokazi, who broke into Pirates’ first team in March and has since established himself as a regular for both club (19 appearances made for the Buccaneers) and country, was singled out as a player ready to take the next step.

“If you see the quality and the talent of Mbokazi, I’m very sorry to Pirates but this guy has to go away next year,” Broos told SABC Sport.

“He will become better when he plays good competition and at a higher level. If he stays here, it will become too easy for him because he’s good. He needs another motivation, another challenge. That makes him become better.”

Broos added that more South African players need to secure moves abroad for the national team to continue its upward trajectory.

“There are other players who can make the next step and move abroad,” he said.
