Chelsea finalising deal for Ajax sensation

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, according to The Athletic. The two clubs are nearing an agreement on a transfer fee of over €40 million (£34.8m), with a resolution expected in the coming days.

Personal terms have already been agreed with the 19-year-old Netherlands international, who is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in Europe. Hato has made 111 senior appearances for Ajax, captaining the side and featuring mostly at left-back during the 2024-25 season, though he is also comfortable at centre-back.

Chelsea began talks with Ajax earlier this month. Arsenal had previously shown interest in Hato in January 2024 before he signed a new five-year deal with the Dutch club.

Capped six times by the Netherlands, Hato joined Ajax’s academy from Sparta Rotterdam in 2018 and broke into the first team in January 2023. Known for his composure in possession and passing ability, he fits the profile of a ball-dominant defender. Last season, only PSV’s Richy Ledezma had a higher pass completion rate among Eredivisie full-backs.

Chelsea have been active in the summer market, with Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens among the new arrivals. Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez are also joining after pre-agreed deals.

Meanwhile, the club has offloaded Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke and Djordje Petrovic.

While Hato is already strong in one-on-one situations and reads the game well, The Athletic notes that he is still developing physically, which could improve his aerial presence — one of the few areas he can still grow in.

Chelsea view Hato as a long-term defensive solution as they continue to rebuild under their current project.
